I was just “naturally” like “everyone else”.Today, I can look back and understand that the feelings of admiration towards other boys and men — the need to be like them — was pure attraction. For years my brain censored this experience and translated it into a different feeling. One in which erotism, romance, and love were out of the question.
It wasn’t until I moved to Berlin that something inside me began to shift. The city took off the blindfold I had been wearing for the last 23 years. A blindfold woven out of toxic masculinity, homophobia, and heteronormativity.
